4 Tips to Maximize Your Reach-In Closet

Posted on December 13, 2013 by Clever Quarters

12 Days of Organizational Ideas / Day 3

We are in the midst of running a contest on all the major social media outlets. The prize is a dream closet (valued at up to $2,000) and it has caused a lot of homeowners to comment on the lack of space in their traditional reach-in closets. It was these comments that have inspired this blog post which aims to encourage homeowners to love their reach-ins.

Reach in closets are common in many homes and are typically not as deep as their walk-in counterparts. But that doesn’t mean they can’t be just as organized. Here are four tips to a better organized reach-in closet:

1. Vertical Storage Makes a Big Difference: In closets with standard shelves and single rod, it can be hard to utilize every inch of space. Find a storage solution or closet organizer that offers a designated place for everything.

2. Shoe shelves work wonders. Slanted shelves or shoe storage cubbies keep disorderly shoe piles at bay. It also makes picking the perfect pair far easier because you can easily scan available options.

3. Utilize all hanging space. Keep blouses, skirts, dresses and suits in great condition by hanging them. A closet solution that offers double or triple hanging capabilities can really maximize space and can be easily adjusted as your needs change.

4. Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. Our closet storage systems offer accessories such as drawers, tie and belt racks, valet poles, jewelry trays and more. Thinking about your closet as more than just a place for clothes can really help you improve the use of your space.

Your closet can meet your storage needs and look great doing it. Contact us (604.464.1999) for a free closet consultation.

Clean Up Your Garage Floor With An Inexpensive Garage Floor Coating

Posted on December 3, 2013 by Clever Quarters

12 Days of Organizational Ideas / Day 2

Is your garage floor dirty? Concrete is a very porous surface that can collect a lot of dirt and grime, which can be tracked onto your home’s clean floors.

There are several ways to tackle a grimy garage floor:

1. Pressure Washing: Pressure washing your concrete can help clean up dirt and debris. However, although this may solve a short-term problem, it doesn’t change the retentive nature of concrete.

2. Epoxy Coatings: Painting the floor with an epoxy paint can clean up the garage floor and make it far more difficult for dirt to permeate into the concrete. The issue with this method is that it doesn’t last long…. especially in damp climates and/or high traffic areas. After one or two Vancouver winters, epoxy floors lift and peel and cannot be properly repaired.

3. Polyurethane Garage Floor Coating: Enhanced with resinous flooring technology, Polyurethane garage floor coatings can withstand extreme temperature changes, damp climates and high traffic volume. Polyurethane floor coatings are resistant to stains, spills, and slips and cost as little at $6.5/per sq ft to install. They can also be installed and driven on in the same day.

Winter Tire Storage Ideas

Posted on November 30, 2013 by Clever Quarters

12 Days of Organizational Ideas / Day 1

It’s not snowing in Vancouver… yet – but they are calling for flurries next week. So it’s probably time to start thinking about changing over to winter tires.

Tires are dirty, smelly, heavy and awkward. They also require a proper storage solution to ensure that they stay out of the way. And, if you’ve got nice wheels, they need to stay protected from scratches. Here are a few garage storage suggestions that might help:

1. Wall Storage: Store your tires up an off the ground using a wall storage system. This way, tires can be easily accessed but stay protected from damage and out of the way.

2. Overhead Storage: Looking for a more out of the way solution? Maximize the space in your garage by storing tires overhead. Because winter/summer tires are seasonal, they are a great fit for an overhead storage solution.

Tire storage solutions are fast, easy and inexpensive to install. Contact to learn more about our wide variety of storage solutions and custom garages.

Beyond the Man Cave: How the Whole Family Benefits from a Custom Garage

Posted on November 4, 2012 by Clever Quarters

A rose by any other name is still a rose but a garage by any other name is…whatever you want it to be.

Your garage is such a large and glorious space that it’s a shame to confine its use to parking cars and storing boxes.  And, even though it’s trendy, there’s no reason to forfeit all control of the space to the man of the house.  A garage is so much more than a Man Cave.

There’s room in your garage to accommodate the custom needs of your entire family.  The possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

To help you get those creative juices flowing, here are a few new ways to use your Flex Room or Multipurpose Room, AKA your Garage:

The Garage is the New Attic

Why lug your Christmas decorations up and down from a dusty, musty (and kind of creepy) attic every holiday season?

Your garage is an ideal place to store summer camp gear, fishing gear, sporting gear, winter tires, patio furniture and just about anything that needs a between-seasons home.

Tuck away turkey roasters and Thanksgiving-themed oven mitts in enclosed garage cabinets, hang bikes and golf bags on wall mount garage organizers and store large and heavy items such as lawn mowers and barbecue grills overhead storage.

Garage overhead storage units can hold weights of up to 800 pounds, and a heist can help you lift items of up to 250 pounds.    Why trip over a kayak lying on the floor of your garage when you can keep it out of everyone’s way overhead using a heavy lift garage hoist system?

The Garage is the New Mudroom and the New Front Entrance

Garage Cabinets, Shoe Storage

If you’re like me, you might not even remember the last time you used your front door to enter your home.  So why are you still hanging up coats and putting away boots in the front hall closet?

Your garage is an ideal place to store shoes, boots, coats, scarves, backpacks and more.  In cool temperatures, you can put your child’s lunch in his backpack the night before — and not worry about forgetting it in the refrigerator on your rush to get to school.

The Garage is the New Pantry

In the winter, your garage can serve as a second refrigerator (or freezer on some days) and can be a source of dry goods storage year round.

But that doesn’t mean you have to clutter your garage with cases of Coke and packages of toilet paper.  Your garage can serve as your home’s well-organized storage hub.

Sturdy, spacious garage cabinets are the perfect place to store sale items you purchase in bulk, occasionally-used kitchen appliances such as waffle makers and mini-muffin pans and almost anything that’s taking up too much space in your kitchen.

The Garage is the New Storage Shed

You may not have room in your yard for a shed and it is not such a safe choice to store your expensive sport gear.  And a pre-built shed may not adequately protect expensive items from weather damage or theft.

Store your garden tools, bikes, sports gear and other valuables in your garage.  Garage wall organizers keep such items off the floor and out of the way.

With wall-mounted garage organizers racks, you never have to trip over a rake or bump into a set of golf clubs again.

The Garage is the New Closet

Well-built houses last for centuries.  But some of their designs don’t hold up over the years.

You can add a lot of extra space to a reach-in closet with a custom garage organizer, but it make still not accommodate all of your clothes and accessories.

Garage storage cabinets measure 24-inches deep and can accommodate two rows of hanging space.

he Garage is the New Hobby Centre

If someone in your family enjoys woodworking, another likes to make pottery and someone else wants space to create the greatest invention since the iPhone, a custom design for your garage can create workstations to fit all of your needs and desires.

The Garage is the New____________

Fill in the blank.  There are myriad ways to use your garage space.  Whether you seek a traditional use — workshop or guys’ hangout — or something as innovative as a dance studio, consult a design consultant to get a custom garage organization that meets your family’s style, budget and imagination.

Of course, installing decorative garage flooring system, makes your space a truly finished space. With garage flooring not only makes maintenance of your space simple and keeps free of stains and clean.

Finally, when you have everything organized stored off-the-floor finally you make the space to bring back your cars to the garage.

Space with Grace: Creating an Ideal Home Office

Posted on November 2, 2012 by Clever Quarters

The great thing about working at home is that your daily commute time is about 30 seconds — the time it takes you to travel from your bed to your desk.

The bad part about working from home is finding a place to work.  If you work from home, you need work space in your home office.

Ideally, you can use or convert an entire room in your house into a home office.  But, even a lot of highly-paid executives don’t have entire rooms to call their own.  So, don’t let lack of space cramp your office style. But do make whatever space you have count.

Let’s say, for example, that your bedroom has to double as a home office.  Create a distinguishable space for your office –don’t let your dresser double as a desk or use your filing cabinets to store your sweaters.  It’s better to make a tiny corner of your room your “office cubicle” than to mingle work and home areas.

If you’re creating a home office on a budget, there are a lot of ways in which you can economize — buying used rather than new office furniture, for example — and some luxuries that you can skip altogether until your income rises to the level of your good taste.

But don’t give this vital area of a successful home office short shrift:  organization.

If you’re not naturally organized — if you habitually lose pens under piles of paper and haven’t met a cord you couldn’t tangle — seek a free custom home office design consultation to help to get your home office organized.

Because it’s one thing to keep a messy desk in a downtown office — you can shut off the lights, shut the door and ignore the mess until the next morning.  But, if you’re making a mess in a space that you also eat or sleep in, you’ll never achieve separation from your work.  You will — in spirit, at least — be working around the clock.

Even if you’re normally pretty organized, you may also want to seek help from a professional office organizer.  You might keep a tidy desk, but how do you keep electrical cords out a teething puppy’s reach or make certain that your toddler can’t pull heavy objects down on him?  A visit with a professional design consultant can help you create the space you need and the safety you demand in your home office.

Here are 5 things you will gain by working with a professional office organizer:

  1. Expert advice on how to get the most out of your space.
  2. A plan to meet your furniture, equipment, lighting, storage, organization and teleconferencing needs.
  3. A home office that provides for your privacy, safety and security.
  4. An uncluttered environment that fuels efficiency and productivity.
  5. A unique working environment that matches your professional standards.

And, if you choose to let us complete the home office installation for you, you’ll get a lifetime guarantee on our work.

Want to keep your home office organized?  Kristin Long, a professional organizer and guest on HGTV’s Mission: Organization offers these tips:

Label everything and put everything back in its place at the end of your work day.

  • Remove all furniture that isn’t being used.
  • Create a computer closet to reduce sound, keep cords organized and your work and “close the door” on your office at the end of the day.
  • Include an “inspiration station” — a place to keep notes and photos to inspire and motivate you.

Because we know how much our business means to us, we respect how much your business means to you — and will strive to create a home office for you that meets your high standards as well as our own.

What to Expect During a Design Consultation for Your Home Organization Project

Posted on November 1, 2012 by Clever Quarters

When you decide to redesign or organize space in your home, including your bedroom closets, garage,  kitchen and home office, your next step is to consult with a professional designer and organizer.

Although most designers offer free consultations, ask before you make an appointment so you don’t get any unwelcome surprises.  And, to get the greatest benefit from the visit, here are some things to consider before and during your consultation:

Before Your Appointment:
  • Prepare the space you want organized.  You don’t have to remove everything from the area — there’s no need to empty your garage,  for example — but make sure there’s room for the consultant to take necessary measurements.
  • Create a wish list.  You can involve the whole family in this.  Make the experience exciting and memorable for everyone.  In a perfect world, what would your newly-designed closets organizer, garage, media room or kitchen look like?
  • Prioritize your wish list.  When the consultant arrives, he or she may tell you that it’s not possible to accommodate everything on your wish list.  It will make the consultation more pleasant if you decide before the appointment whether drawers or extra shelves in your closet are more appointment and whether it’s more important to fit all of your cars or an entertainment center and pool table in your custom garage.
  • Schedule an appointment at a time when all decision-makers can be present.  Plan a time that allows time for the design consultant to make rough sketches — and for everyone to view the sketches and participate fully in the consultation.
  • Avoid embarrassment. A design consultant will typically come to your home, which is a very personal space.  A professional will respect your privacy but, if there’s something you don’t want the consultant to see, remove it from sight before your appointment time.
During the Consultation:
  • Let the Consultant Take the Lead.  Design consultants have years of experience and are well-trained to make a design to fit your needs.  It’s usually better to let the consultant draft an initial design and for you to ask for changes than to present a design to the design consultant.
  • Watch the Transformation.  Design consultants use 3D design software so they can show you precisely how your new space will look. You don’t have to look at pencil drawings and use your imagination to see how your newly designed and organized closet, home office, pantry or garage will look.
  • Discuss your stuff. The design consultant will get some ideas about how to organize your space by looking at the stuff stored in the location.  If some of the items won’t remain in the area, let the consultant know.  Also, if your house is new and your space bare, talk to the consultant about what you would like to store in each place.
  • Participate.  Don’t be intimidated by the consultant.  He or she is the expert — but it’s your house and you’ll be the one living with the design.  So take part in the planning. If you have questions or suggestions, share them.
  • Discuss Benefits.  The design consultant has good reasons for creating a particular plan.  But to make certain that the plan is right for you, ask how the proposed plan will benefit you.  Find out if the plan is versatile — can the space be used in ways different than those who you see in the 3D rendition or sample photos?
  • Ask Questions.  Don’t be shy about asking about the company, how long it’s been in business, what kind of similar projects the company has been completed, what it considers its area of expertise, how long the project will take, what the payment options are, what sort of guarantees you will get on the work.  You probably want to avoid getting opinion about other companies.  If you want to comparison shop, fine, but don’t ask one professional to judge another.

It’s fun and exciting to transform a cluttered, poorly designed or inefficient storage area into a beautiful area that fits your lifestyle, taste and needs.  And, with a design consultant’s help, your ideas can come to life.

Don’t Wait for a National Holiday: Tips to Organize your Garage Now

Posted on October 19, 2012 by Clever Quarters

Did you miss National Clean out Your Garage Day Sept 8?  That’s OK.  You don’t have to wait another year to tackle the clutter in your garage.

Before: Stuff that has no other places to go end up sitting on the corners and the sides.
Before: Shoes everywhere

Here are three Any Day, Any Time Tips for organizing your garage:

Think Vertically
After: Making sense of your garage space with a nice hobby workshop for the boys, finally all the tools have their own place.

Some people like to convert their garages into offices, playrooms and “man caves.”  And those are great ideas.  But, if you want to leave room in your garage for its intended purpose — housing your car —  move storage items to the walls of your garage.

Consider vertical shelving or, if you’re especially clutter-prone, vertical cabinets so you can close the door on unsightly items.

Sarah, the author of a blog called Thrifty Decor Chick, found that getting items off the floor of her garage wasn’t enough.  She shoved so many things on open shelves that she ended up with about as much mess on the walls as she used to have on the floor.

According to Fox News, Sarah solved the problem by investing in closed-storage pieces.  There may still be a mess behind the doors, but no one has to see it.

Learn about how you can take advantage of genius solutions on garage overhead storage, garage wall organization solutions and how you can simplify your life using heavy duty garage cabinets.

Think Safety
After: Spacious garage cabinets to store seasonal items or used as extra pantry storage. Open ventilated shelving for recycle bins, sport gear, shoes and garden tools.

Even if you don’t mind a little — or a lot — of clutter in your garage, there’s a critical reason to clean up the mess:  Safety for you and your family.

Antifreeze stored on the floor or your garage may spill.  This can be toxic — even deadly — to your dogs and cats.  Static electricity from the flick of a light switch can cause propane tanks to explode, and ladders can topple over and injure your loved ones, according to garage safety tips from the DIY Network.

Some items, such as gas barbecue grills, should be moved out of the garage (a shed that stands at least 10 feet away from your house can protect it during the winter).

Get any other hazardous items off the floor and, if the walls of your garage don’t provide enough storage, consider overhead storage solutions.

After: Polyaspartic garage flooring finishes up the space, makes your garage shine and easy to maintain.

Think Outside the Box
After: Shoes stored nicely on the ventilated shelving. It is not just a shoes shelf, it is teaching the kids how to do it right.

We mean this literally.  Cardboard boxes are ideal for moving, and you may want to hang onto some specialty boxes — the original packing boxes for your computer or TV — but paper containers are a fire hazard and won’t protect their contents from water damage.

So, unload the cardboard boxes.  Find safe, durable containers for the items in the boxes that you really want to keep.

As to the rest, throw it out.

Organizing your garage is not just about finding room for all of your clutter.  It’s about eliminating the clutter you don’t need.

Need help sifting through the good, the bad and the ugly?  Not sure where to begin on a makeover for your garage?  Our team of professional garage organization experts will be happy to help.

Fun & Games: A Garage Turned Playroom

Posted on May 15, 2011 by Clever Quarters

Space, space, space, there’s never enough space. That’s the way the Fane family felt about their house this past winter. After enjoying a fantastic holiday with their one and a half year old daughter, parents Gwynne and Matthew struggled to find room to fit all her newly acquired toys.

Having moved from their small apartment downtown into a much larger house to accommodate their growing need for room, the Fane family quickly realized that it’s not how much space you have, it’s how well it’s organized.

“Our garage is very narrow and has a couple of design challenges that I worried would be show stoppers for the Clever Quarters crew” explains Gwynne. “But their design consultant was determined to make it work; he mocked up several options until we got the one that worked best for how we intended to use the space”.

Transforming their single car garage into storage and a playroom for their daughter, Gwynne and Matthew couldn’t be more pleased with the results. “We absolutely love our newly renovated garage”, said Matthew who shares the space with his daughter. “The cabinets have enabled me to organize everything that was in the garage already and lock it away so that little hands can’t get into them”.

Storing everything into orderly locked cabinets has made it possible to transform the space into a dual function room that can be used for storage and as a playroom and an extension of the home.

Clever Quarters is launched: Custom Closets, Storage Solutions

Posted on March 15, 2011 by Clever Quarters

We have launched Clever Quarters, the provider of premium custom closets and storage solutions, in March 2011 in Metro Vancouver in time for the spring cleaning season to get your home organized and styled.

Clever Quarters: Custom Closets, Storage Cabinets

We offer custom design solutions, particularly storage cabinets and organizers for closets, entryway, basement, home office, media room, pantry, and laundry. Clever Quarters serves clients in Metro Vancouver, and Fraser Valley.

Our products lines will continue to focus on garage cabinets, flooring, and organizers and will shift under Clever Quarters over the next few months.

“We have a lot of happy customers from our garage product line who wanted solutions for the rest of their homes” explains Askari, the General Manager. “It made sense to expand our service offering to other interior spaces.”

Some of the most used parts of each home also tend to be the most overlooked by way of design. Poor design leads to under-utilized, inefficient, and unorganized spaces, which impacts everyday living.

“We start and finish our day by reaching in our closet to get dressed. We spend a fortune accumulating our wardrobe. Yet when it comes to keeping it organized, the closet tends to be an area we pay minimal attention to.” states Askari. “It impacts how prepared we are for the day and how quickly we can get ready.”

We address this issue by bringing function and style to the various quarters of each home. Professional designers visit homeowners for a free consultation to determine functional requirements of the space and the style. If the design is accepted by the client, we design and build the solution.

Anti-Slip Industrial Flooring: Lush Cosmetics

Posted on January 16, 2011 by Clever Quarters

Lush Cosmetics, a manufacturer of some of the world’s finest soaps and oil based bath products, takes workplace safety very seriously – especially when it comes to slippery floors.

Chris Smith, Lush’s Facilities Manager for Western North America, sees slip-and-fall related injuries as a major problem for cosmetic plants, where slippery build-up on the floors can create a hazardous working environment for employees.

In fact, according to Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), some sixty thousand workers in Canada get injured annually due to slip and fall accidents. This number represents about 15% of the “time-loss injuries” accepted by workers’ compensation boards or commissions across Canada. Per CCOHS, statistics show that the majority (over 60%) of falls happen on the floor resulting from slips and trips.

That’s why, earlier this winter, Chris contacted Clever Quarters about low maintenance, anti-slip, commercial flooring options. “Each of our production rooms has a different type of slippery build-up. The previous flooring was dangerously slippery and hard to clean, wasted time and money in maintenance” said Chris.

The plant’s flooring was a safety issue, but Lush couldn’t halt production to install new flooring. “We understand that our industrial, commercial and institutional clientele can’t just close-up for renovation as it would be very costly and impact their commitment to their customers. So, as was the case with Lush, we worked within their schedule to get the job done, without impacting production” said Askari Sabbaghi, President of Clever Quarters.

No down time was a huge selling feature for Chris, but more so was the unique product attributes and the above and beyond service he received from Clever Quarters. “The Clever Quarters team assessed our old plant flooring and took the time to learn how we use the space. The new floor is easy to clean and the staff and senior management are very pleased with the finished product” Chris beamed. “One staff member even described it a 900% improvement, he was elated at how easy it was to walk around without slipping” he continued. “Not only would I recommend Clever Quarters to friends and other businesses, but also when I renovate my garage, I’ll be contacting them for sure”

A ‘Pit Stop Fit’ for a Pro – Shane’s Garage Story

Posted on January 9, 2011 by Clever Quarters

A professional race-car driver by trade, Shane Bourel knows the importance of a garage that’s both functional and aesthetically appealing.

Used as a place to entertain guests, play video games, poker and fix his race-car and bike, Shane’s garage is nothing short of a work of art.

Designed by Clever Quarters, the garage features a dramatic black ceiling and was designed to build in his TV and an 8’ workbench stainless steel workbench with drawers for his tools. Shane’s garage uses garage floor coating in Graphite ¼” finish and powder-coated garage cabinets in Granite color with stainless a steel counter-top.

Thrilled with new space, Shane said that his experience was ‘exactly’ as he’d expected and ‘the final result was excellent’. One of the most distinguishing factors to Shane was Clever Quarters’ space design process and ability to presenting him exactly how his space would look.

‘When I first saw the computerized mock up, it looked terrific and I quickly agreed to proceed. Other companies only vaguely described how my space would look. The install only took a couple of days and every detail was quickly taken care of.’

Shane frequently showcases his Clever Quarters Garage. In fact, a recent newlywed, Shane even hosted overflow younger guests in his garage during his wedding reception.

A truly spectacular space, Shane is pleased to say that his garage is something to ‘be proud of’.

Pat & Ted’s Garage Story

Posted on December 20, 2010 by Clever Quarters

Earlier this year, Pat and Ted Serne faced a challenge many homeowners face. After moving from their Coquitlam townhome to their new home in Surrey, they quickly realized – you can never have too much storage space. Although their current house is considerably larger than the last, they needed to become better at using their garage to store their things.

‘After buying a new home and having the basement completely finished, we realized we didn’t have enough storage space’ said Ted. ‘The garage seemed to be a collecting zone for everything we couldn’t find a place for.’

Ted, a handyman, hobbyist and talented woodworker, spends much of his time in the garage building things for his five grandchildren. He and Pat also use their garage to store their two cars, motorbike and camping gear. So the growing clutter occupying his new garage meant that he had no space for hobby work, little own to park.

After getting a few professional quotes, Pat and Ted toured the Dream Home Lottery show home featuring a spectacular garage donated and installed by Clever Quarters and decided to make a phone call.

‘The Clever Quarters designer that worked on our garage was very professional and gave us a quote within an hour and a half’ said Ted. ‘Best of all, by the end of his visit, we had a complete 3D diagram to help us visualize our new space.’

The garage was completely transformed in less than two days and consisted of:

  • Chip flooring (Sedona ¼”)
  • Two Overhead Rack above the garage door for to store lawn furniture, storage bins, holiday decor, camping gear and CDs and DVDs
  • A HeavyLift Hoist to store their lawnmower, table saw, tool box and pressure washer. The hoist can be lowered down to load and unload without a ladder
  • Wire Shelves on grids for shoes and recycle bins
  • Gridwall on the right wall to store their bike, golf gear, gardening tools and other sports gear
  • Cabinets with 6’ workbench space and built-in fridge

Pleased with the results, Ted commended the install crew for not only helping him layout the garage organizers that enabled him to get ‘everything off the floor’ but also for offering guidance on how to organize his space for his lifestyle.
