I had the chance to collaborate with Jane Stoller, who is also known as Organized Jane, on a project to renovate the closets in her Vancouver condo. Working with Jane gave me a new perspective on efficiency, as she paid great attention to detail when folding clothes and arranging photos on shoe boxes. Jane is exceptionally skilled at organizational skills, and I was genuinely impressed by her abilities.

Let's take a deep dive into the world of customized closet solutions as we explore Jane's fascinating journey through the challenges faced by even the most organized individuals without the right tools. This project serves as a shining example of the importance of having the perfect tools to conquer any task.

What is a Custom Closet?

In the crowded market of custom closet providers, the term 'custom' can mean different things. Design consultants' skills vary. To fully maximize space, it is important to have a deep understanding of ergonomics and knowledge of accessories that enhance a closet's functionality. The Clever Quarters team goes above and beyond and ensures that your customized closet meets the highest standards of functionality and aesthetics.

Jane's response was noteworthy when asked about her decision to collaborate with Clever Quarters. She mentioned that Clever Quarters was the only company that considered the items that needed to be stored. Other companies asked her what she wanted, while Clever Quarters took the initiative to understand her specific needs. Jane's experience demonstrates how the Clever Quarters Experience stablishes a high standard for customization and service.

Why choose a built-in closet?

Transforming your closet from wire shelving to a custom built-in design can completely revolutionize storage space. Built-in closets offer tailored solutions that are crafted to maximize every inch of the space, allowing for efficient organization and a sleek, personalized look. During our consultation with Clever Quarters, we explored the numerous benefits of choosing a built-in closet, including increased functionality, enhanced aesthetic appeal, and the opportunity for complete customization. By delving into the advantages of this tailored approach, we gained a deeper understanding of how a custom design can elevate Jane's closet's form and function.

How Do You Design a Custom Closet?

Prioritizing goals is the first step in creating a custom closet. We observed Jane's condo and identified what worked and what didn't. We examined her daily routine to determine which accessories would bring her vision to life. These accessories look good and provide practical use in the space. As Steve Jobs once said, design is not just about appearance but also about functionality. We aimed to make Jane's closet both aesthetically pleasing and efficient.

Gaining an external perspective is crucial when attempting to change habits in a project like this. Understanding the rationale behind actions is just as important as knowing how to carry them out. An outside viewpoint often uncovers inefficiencies and introduces new possibilities, offering a fresh and insightful approach to current practices.

What are the important measurements for designing a custom-built closet?

Closet dimensions and door openings are important measurements. Customization goes beyond basics. Fine details matter. Shelf dimensions are determined by the size of neatly folded jeans. Different hangers need different spaces. These subtle details distinguish good design from exceptional design. A quick, general needs assessment during a short in-home consultation is not sufficient.

Conducting a needs assessment for Jane, an organized individual, proceeded smoothly. She demonstrated a clear understanding of effective item grouping and efficient storage. The collection of measurements and the creation of a photographic inventory proved essential in consolidating the required information.

Is Designing and Building a Bedroom Closet an Easy DIY Project?

Many DIY videos and "Hacks" are available for designing and building a closet. However, the value of a specialized closet company depends on your priorities for organization and personalization. If you only need basic storage space for clothes and are comfortable with a makeshift solution, then a DIY project may be sufficient for you.

However, hiring a professional closet company can significantly impact your organization and create more space in limited areas. Professional Closet Companies Provide:

  • Expertise and Experience: Professionals bring specialized knowledge and experience to the table. They understand the intricacies of closet design, including space optimization, organization systems, and material selection.
  • Tailored Storage Solutions: Professional closet designers can create customized solutions tailored to your specific needs, preferences, and lifestyle. They can maximize space utilization and functionality while ensuring aesthetics and practicality.
  • Time and Efficiency: Professional designers streamline the process, saving time and effort. They have the skills to efficiently assess your space, develop designs, and coordinate installation, saving you the hassle of trial and error.
  • Access to Resources: Professional closet specialists can access a wide range of resources, including quality materials, innovative products, and industry contacts. They can recommend the best options for your budget and requirements.
  • Long-Term Value: Investing in a professional custom-built closet design can enhance the value of your home. A well-designed and organized closet can improve functionality, increase storage capacity, and enhance the overall appeal of your space.

An organized and customized entrance closet.

Upon initial examination, Jane's entry closet appears to be fully utilized. The hanging items occupy the entire length of the space, the top shelf contains numerous belongings, and the floor is filled with shoes. Although enhancing this organization might seem difficult, an effective solution was achieved by comprehending her inventory and priorities.

The objective was to maintain the current hanging space while also making room for long coats, tall boots, handbags, scarves, and around 20 pairs of shoes. Additionally, access panels on the back wall needed to remain uncovered.

Jane came up with a useful idea to maximize storage in her entry closet by integrating shoe containers. Each container can hold 2-3 pairs of flat sandals, effectively tripling the storage capacity. Jane went a step further and labeled each container with a photo of its contents, making it easy to identify items from a distance.

An Inviting Spare reach-in Closet Organizers for Guests

When we first met Jane, she had temporarily relocated her wardrobe to her spare closet, as she had removed the wire shelf from her main closet for this project.

The objective of this closet was to create a comfortable space for long-term guests to unpack. Furthermore, it would function as the storage space for Jane's husband's seasonal and rarely worn clothing. It was also important to take into account to install a closet organizers system that appreciate in resale value. If they decide to sell, this system should have the flexibility to meet the needs of any potential buyer.

A spare reach-in closet with ample space for expansion

The basic wire shelving commonly found in new home construction is inefficient and most often does not meet the needs of the occupants. It is common to find a dresser placed inside a closet, but this poses challenges when the dresser is deeper than the closet.

Our goal was to create a flexible kids' closet that can be easily resold. The European 32 mm system is a key feature of our closet systems. It allows for future adjustments as needed. This system allows shelves, rods, and accessories to be easily moved and added. The 32 mm system helped us design a space that can adapt as the closet's needs change. By dividing the closet into equal sections on either side of the drawer bank, the shelving can easily shift from one side to the other. This allows the closet to transform from a child's closet to a versatile space for a teenager.

After purchasing her condo, Jane discovered that the single wire rack in her 13-foot primary closet was insufficient. To maintain a clean and minimalist aesthetic in the primary bedroom, it was necessary for the closet to serve multiple purposes.

The goal was to create storage space for their weekday clothing, incorporating a mix of hanging and shelving options for items such as shoes, handbags, and folded clothes. Drawers were also needed for undergarments. Furthermore, a solution was needed to organize a large tie and pocket square assortment.
