I recently had the privilege of collaborating with the esteemed Jane Stoller aka Organized Jane on the closet renovations for her Vancouver condo. Working alongside Jane provided a fresh perspective on efficiency. From her meticulous clothing folds to the thoughtful arrangement of photos on her shoe boxes, Jane sets the bar for efficiency, and it's truly a sight to behold.
This specific project stood out as a revealing illustration of the difficulties even the most organized individuals can face when lacking the proper tools. As I reflect on Jane’s journey, I will reveal some of her tips and tricks for getting and staying organized. Let's take a deep dive into the world of customized closet solutions.
What is a Built-In Custom Closet?
In a market saturated with custom closet providers, the term 'custom' assumes varied interpretations. Unlocking the space's full potential requires a profound understanding of ergonomics and its core function. At Clever Quarters, we understand that good design is about how it works, and great design is in the finer details.
Transforming your closet from wire shelving to a custom built-in design can completely revolutionize your storage capacity. Built-in closets are crafted to maximize every inch of space, allowing for efficient organization and a sleek, personalized look. When the design considers the items being stored, staying organized is much easier.
When questioned about her choice to collaborate with Clever Quarters, Jane's response was telling: “Clever Quarters was the only company that took into account the items that were being stored. Every other company simply asked me what I wanted, whereas Clever Quarters took the initiative to understand my specific needs.”
At Clever Quarters, we take the time to learn about our clients. Understanding who they are helps us alleviate their pain points. The Clever Quarters Experience sets us apart and is one of the secrets to our success and raving client reviews.
How Do You Design a Custom Closet?
Setting and prioritizing goals is the first step in creating a custom closet. Jane outlined her daily routine; through this process, we could identify what worked and what didn't. We identified her key pain points and were able to suggest solutions that would bring her vision to life. While accessories look beautiful, they can also be key in efficiently maximizing a space. As Steve Jobs once said, "Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it’s really how it works."
Gaining an external perspective is crucial when attempting to change habits in a project like this. Understanding the rationale behind actions is just as important as knowing how they are carried out. An outside perspective frequently brings to light inefficiencies and can illuminate new possibilities, offering a fresh and insightful approach to current practices.
What Measurements Are Important When Designing a Custom-Built Closet?
Closet dimensions and door openings are important measurements, but customization goes beyond basics. The true essence of a customized design lies in the finer details. Consider, for instance, the width of a neatly folded pile of jeans. The dimensions of a shelf should be determined by the quantity and dimensions of its occupancy. Moreover, understanding the differences in space required for shirts on wooden hangers versus velvet hangers. These nuanced details are what distinguish a customized closet from a manufactured-to-fit solution.
A detailed needs assessment requires care and consideration. A photo inventory often helps remind you of the key components. Acquiring measurements for critical items will help drive the design process.
In Jane’s case, she already had a clear vision of what items should be grouped together and how they would be most efficiently stored. Often, this is part of the assessment process: understanding how to best store items vs. what you currently do out of necessity.
Is Designing and Building a Bedroom Closet an Easy DIY Project?
With a quick search, you will find many DIY videos and “Hacks” that make designing and building a closet seem simple. So, what value do you receive from a closet company specializing in custom closet organizers and custom home storage solutions? Is it really worth the investment? The answer to this question depends on your value on the organization and personalization. If a bedroom closet is simply a place to store clothing and you can install a makeshift solution, then maybe a simple DIY project is right for you.
However, hiring a professional closet company will make a world of difference if you view it as a tool to keep you organized and create space where space is limited.

Jane’s Closet Transformation
A Clean and Organized Custom Entrance Closet
Upon initial examination, Jane's entry closet appears to be fully utilized. The hanging items occupy the entire length of the space, the top shelf contains numerous belongings, and the floor is filled with shoes. Although enhancing this organization might seem difficult, comprehending her inventory and priorities enabled an effective solution.
The objective was to maintain the current hanging space while also making room for long coats, tall boots, handbags, scarves, and around 20 pairs of shoes. Additionally, access panels on the back wall needed to remain uncovered.
Jane devised a valuable idea to maximize storage in her entry closet by integrating shoe containers. Each container can hold 2-3 pairs of flat sandals, effectively tripling the storage capacity. Jane went a step further and labeled each container with a photo of its contents, making it easy to identify items from a distance.

An Inviting Reach-in Closet Organizers for Guests
When we first met Jane, she had temporarily relocated her wardrobe to her spare closet, as she had removed the wire shelf from her main closet for this project.
The objective of this closet was to create a comfortable space for long-term guests to unpack. Furthermore, it would function as the storage space for Jane's husband's seasonal and rarely worn clothing. It was also essential to take into account the installation of a closet organizers system that appreciates in resale value. If they decide to sell, this system should have the flexibility to meet the needs of any potential buyer.

A Spare Closet with Room to Grow
The basic wire shelving commonly found in new home construction is inefficient and most often does not meet the occupants' needs. It is common to find a dresser placed inside a closet, but this poses challenges when the dresser is deeper than the closet.
We aimed to create a flexible kids' closet that can be easily resold. The European 32 mm system is a crucial feature of our closet systems. It allows for future adjustments as needed. This system allows shelves, rods, and accessories to be easily moved and added. The 32 mm system helped us design a space that can adapt as the closet's needs change. By dividing the closet into equal sections on either side of the drawer bank, the shelving can easily shift from one side to the other. This allows the closet to transform from a child's closet to a versatile space for a teenager.

The Primary Custom Closet for Jane
After purchasing her condo, Jane discovered that the single wire rack in her 13-foot primary closet was insufficient. To maintain a clean and minimalist aesthetic in the primary bedroom, it was necessary for the closet to serve multiple purposes.
The goal was to create storage space for their weekday clothing, incorporating a mix of hanging and shelving options for items such as shoes, handbags, and folded clothes. Drawers were also needed for undergarments. Furthermore, a solution was needed to organize a large tie and pocket square assortment.
